Inconsistent Installation

Bought to replace the same model JVM3160DF4 WW from 2018. Hanging system was different and we had to reconfigure the cabinet holes above and the wall behind. The whole point of re-ordering the same model was to avoid problems with installation. The unit seems to work as it should.

Microwave similar to my last one which lasted 14 yrs with daily use. Hope this one last as long. Took three tries before getting a working microwave. First one was damaged right out of the box. Second one lasted about an hour after installation. Light kept cycling on and off, then displayed F3 error. Of course, the installers had already left. The third one was installed a week ago™€¦working fine, so far!

Broken handle

Good unit with some annoying features

Great unit for the price. I got what paid for with a few minor annoyances such as #1- door open and close is LOUD #2 - buttons could be more sensitive and backlit #3- the plastic inner top won™€™t hold my magnetic splatter cover. #4- the templates 5UCK. #5- there™€™s plenty of space in the manual for illustrated measurements but ™€¦.. I added cabinet bumper pads next to the door latch holes and put white electrical tape on the door latches to dampen the ™€œslam™€. Now, I don™€™t wake the entire house closing the microwave on a midnight snack op. I installed it myself and considered posting a video ™€œInstalling OTR microwave alone? Here™€™s how to lift it into position using a ratchet strap™€. Installing alone was difficult but it did force an idea to patent an easier support and install system.

My microwave was purchased in October 2023 and installed by their authorized installers in December 2023. Just over a year later (after the limited warranty expired) a small chunk of the handle fell off when my wife closed it. Yesterday, July 20, 2026 a large chunk fell off while I was wiping the handle. I called to get the replacement part and was informed it would be $172 just for the handle. What! $172 for a plastic handle on a microwave that can be bought new for less than $300? Ridiculous! What happened to the GE that produced good quality products?

Poor Design and Possibly Dangerous

Concerning Build Quality ™€" Possible Missing Part Our new GE microwave appears to be missing a piece on top of the unit. We've had multiple calls with GE about this, and the responses have been inconsistent ™€" some representatives suggested it was designed this way for ventilation, while others agreed it looks like something is missing. GE's quality control team stated the design is intentional. However, I can fit half of my hand into three separate holes while the microwave door is closed, which doesn't seem right for a factory-standard design. As compensation, GE offered to let us purchase a second microwave at a "discount" ™€" one that would nearly equal what we already paid for this unit. Not exactly the resolution we were hoping for. After another round of calls, the technician said that the gaping holes in the top are by GE's design so we're stuck with a microwave with dangerous gaps that will quickly fill with dirt and dust.

I bought this unit as it was the same as the one it replaced and was therefore easier to install. I am on my 4th or 5th GE unit. Problem is I only rec'd one mesh duct screen and no owner's manual. I needed that to be able to order the non-vented charcoal filter that I cannot id without the owner's manual.

This white colored over the range unit replaces an identical black microwave, same model number, that lasted 12 years before it died. It served us well. What is odd to me is that the unit dimensions are not square. The back height is 3/4 inch greater than the front. So if you look at it from the side where a wall cabinet is placed the appearance indicates the unit is not level. Also the white color does not match the white of our GE gas oven. The microwave white is not as bright, having more of a cream white color.

I purchased this model to replace the exact same model that failed after 13 years. I did so to avoid having to drill new holes, install new mounting brackets, etc. Big mistake! Even though this unit has the same model number as the one I am replacing, the mounting holes and brackets are totally different.

I recently purchased a new microwave, a GE JMW3160DFWW, from Home Depot. Purchasing from Home Depot™€™s has its own nightmare, purchaser has 48 hours after installation to verify appliance functions appropriately. Then customer deals with GE. After a few days of operation, the microwave began emitting strong chemical or paint odor, overwhelming to be in the kitchen while the microwave was running, the smell affecting my throat and nose. GE™€™s customer service is non-existent. GE insisted that at least 3 repairmen examine the microwave, but GE does not service directly in my area (was not told this before purchase), and it took at least four-five weeks to get through this process. I had to find the last repairman. All three could smell the odor. The first two said it was a ™€œnew™€ appliance smell, like a new car. Never had an appliance used in cooking food that had a ™€œnew™€ smell that lasted for weeks. One suggested I cook something with a stronger smell to mask the chemical smell, so I would be breathing the toxicity but would not know it. The third termed the smell toxic and appliance beyond repair, after which I informed GE that I would like to return the microwave and receive a refund. Big surprise. GE only will replace the microwave with the same model, no refunds. This rule, like GE not servicing in my area, was never mentioned by Home Depot. I refused to take the same model or any model from GE given its evasiveness of its rules and its horrendous customer service. GE refused to reimburse me for my installation and removal ($239) even though it was GE™€™s appliance that malfunctioned. I tell you this as a warning of what you may face if you deal with either GE or Home Depot, although Home Depot finally returned the cost of the microwave but not the installation or removal cost.. UPDATE: Today, 6/22/26, I received a response from GE as follows: "Response from Julia (BULLET) GE_Appliances: We understand that you have already returned the product and we™€™re happy that the retailer was able to assist you. We always recommend reaching out to us directly for product assistance so that we that can work with you toward a resolution before a return is necessary; we™€™re always here to help." This statement is a complete joke. See my response below as to how many times I reached out to GE and got nothing. Many e-mails and at least 20 phone calls. while my 4 yr old gr-grandson and I breathed that chemical smell for weeks. And, I am out $239 for the installation and removal of GE's shoddy and dangerous appliance. Don't fall for GE's hype. There is no integrity in GE. My response to Julia, GE: "Your response is histerical. I did nothing but reach out to you, if you'd bothered to research my case before you responded like you knew everything. I contacted GE frequently for over four weeks, using both emails and phone calls. My case manager was Kevin, case #22740601, emails on 6/8, 6/2 , 5/28, 5/27, 5/27, 5/26, 5/26, 5/10, 5/6. I had contacted Home Depot first and after 48 hours, they basically washed their hands of the customer and refused to do anything except make phone calls to GE, which resulted in nothing. As a result of selecting your ill manufactured and dangerous microwave, I am out $239 for its installation and removal, an 83 year old trying to stay within my pension. The defect was not my fault or the fault of Home Depot, but apparently you got of scott free for your defective appliance you made. I will continue to spread your good will and lack of integrity.

I bought this unit to replace the exact same one we had that started sparking and flashing. The old ones light bulb under the cabinet failed, I could not replace it because when you tried to turn out the bulb it separated from the base. plus the handle broke off which could not be replaced unless you replaced the whole door. The new microwave is completely different. The mounts, to the wall had to be changed. The drill holes to the cabinet above had to be redrilled. The exhaust fan outlet was a different size so the installation was very difficult. Also on the new one the control buttons must be pushed harder than the old one, AND the fan is SO Loud . It runs all the time its separate than the exhaust fan and is louder than the exhaust fan. The door pulls harder and shuts noisier than the other, It's one of 3 same models we had to buy in the last 10 years. That's a shame. I have determined that if I have to replace it again I will put a shelf above the range and buy a counter top model. To bad you can't turn off that running fan. Its no secret that your using the micro wave now. it just seems they are using cheaper materials and charging more.

A word of warning: we bought the microwave along with a range because the salesman told us there would be a one hundred dollar rebate from GE if we purchased them at the same time. The lousy customer service is my complaint, because sometimes appliances die when under warranty and if the company handles it, then it's all good. GE didn't handle it. I purchased an over-the-range microwave with a one year warranty and six months later it began sparking, making a loud explosive noise when starting, and scorched the ceiling. OK, things happen, I opened a warranty claim. I knew they were going to come back and say there was no authorized service technician in my area but I jumped through their hoops and waited a week for them to figure that out for themselves. It's a common problem in Hawaii. Usually a company will refund the original purchase price or ship you a replacement. Well not GE. They simply stopped responding. I've followed up multiple times, they're just ghosting me. So I bought a replacement - a Whirlpool. No more GE for me, with their failure to honor warranty and bad manners to not even respond.

The microwave was fairly easy to install and was a good fit as a replacement for Roper MHE14XMQ0. It performs well although I dislike the loud fan that runs whenever you microwave. I also replaced the Surface Light with a LED ceramic light, which uses considerably less power. However, the Surface Light was too bright either way.

The microwave was fairly easy to install and was a good replacement for our old MHE14XMQ0 Roper Microwave . It looks great and works well. We'll definitely keep it. However, the fan is louder than expected & comes on whenever you microwave anything. The light received with the microwave used 40 watts so I replaced it with an LED that only uses 3 watts (G8 33 LED dimmable ceramic Bulb) The new bulb emits too much light. There doesn't appear to be much difference between Low & High.

This was a replacement for our ancient GE microwave that had finally quit working. It is slightly larger than the old one but fits in the same place over the stove. The new unit has less control settings than the old one, so it is taking a little time to get used to. Otherwise it performs perfectly.

There Are Issues With This Microwave

The Microwave is cheaply made and is flimsy. It is hard to imagine the microwave lasting for a reasonable period of time. The last microwave we had lasted for almost 28 years. The clock light is so bright that we had to cover it with two layers of red cellophane to dim it to a point where one could even stand to look at it. This alone would keep us from purchasing the unit again in the future.
